How to locate fixtures in ceilings with minimal damage? • One way is to use an electronic stud finder but as they are sometimes unreliable, bulky or just too expensive you can use a tried and tested method.
• Chuck an insulation support rod in the cordless drill to send it through your plaster and ceiling floor board. The rod drill through virtually anything so take care to make sure nothing is buried in your wall.
• Use this tip with great care. The rod will penetrate copper and plastic pipes and wires. Check for dangers first, and drill slow.
• This technique allows me to drill in finished ceilings and not cause a lot of damage, as the hole is quickly filled with spackle, virtually invisible to the naked eye.
• Once you insert the rod, unchuck the drill. Then go see where its other end came out.
• If you want a bigger hole, bend some wire and push it up the hole. Then, turn around and if the movement is hindered, you will know a fixture is there.
• If you know the location of a fixture on the floor above, you just need to drill a hole just 1 foot south and note where the drill comes out.
