In what direction should I operate my ceiling fans during summer and winter?
Ceiling fans usually have two types of settings: one of them is forward and the other one is reverse. When you adjust the ceiling fan to the forward setting than the ceiling fan will start to blow the air with the downwards direction. This means that if you stand below the ceiling fan, you will feel a nice and cooling breeze. If you but the ceiling fan in the reverse setting, than as the name says the ceiling fan will start to blow the air in an opposite direction than before which means that the airflow will move upwards. If you would stand under the ceiling fan now, than you would not feel any kind of breeze.

So to conclude, as usually in the summer it is hotter inside and the main idea of having a ceiling fan then is to use it for cooling down the room, than the most suitable setting is the one that will make the air move downwards, which means “forward” settings.

In the winter, when the main though in everybody’s minds is how to keep the rooms warmer than you should use the “reverse” settings as it will circulate the warm air, but when doing that it will not blow any cold air at you to make you feel colder than you already do.
