barn-style interior ceilings

Hey..we have barn style interior ceilings in our loft and two bedrooms..i.e. a small flat ceiling with angled sides that meet a straight vertical wall...how do we go about painting them?..Should we "break" the wall at some point or can we paint the entire room including the ceiling one color?
