i want to make my ceilings 8 ft. instead of 10 ft. where do i start
and what type of books can i get to help me along the way

You will need to build a frame using 2 x 4's and simply build a fake ceiling which will give you an empty space of 2 feet. What you will have to do to build this fake ceiling is take two 2x4's and nail them to the verticals studs inside the walls. Then you will need to nail or screw 2 x 4's across this span using the proper brackets.

Looking from bellow the structure should look something like that. Once your structure is finished you will need to move any light sockets that were sitting in the old ceiling and then drywall your new ceiling, plaster, then paint.
