re-texturizing ceiling

Years ago I used a roll on texturizer on my ceiling. After water damage we re-mudded the ceiling and I am wondering if I can again use the roll on texturizer over the top of the previously texturizer. Is there any way to avod those areas where painting overlays and seems to have a bit of a different finish to it?

you can actually cover the areas you don't want to affect with newspaper and some tape.
