How do I get paint to stick to ceiling?

The ceiling has an old style paint on it and we have tried putting artex on it but it peels off and any other paint just does not stick to it how do overcome this problem?

you should at least get a ceiling paint. there are some paints that are specifically made to suit ceilings. then you should put at least 2 coats of paint on your ceiling to get prime results.
