remove the finish ceiling material, and paint exposed wood joists and decking off white or black. off-white creates an airy "beach house" look, and black creates a more "edgy" contemporary look. the trick is, making sure that the area that you will expose is not overly rugged for your tastes. most homes have an acceptable amount of "imperfections" or blemishes on the wood framing and sheathing. also, make sure to consider where major plumbing lines and electrical lines are run, and try to expose areas where such obtrusive items are at a minimum. some conduit and wires are genearlly accepted visually, but items such as toilet p-traps or major electrical feeders can be unsightly. overall a very effective and affordable solutions, though a little labor intensive when you consider the care that must be taken to properly paint the irregular surfaces while still protecting your walls, floors and belongings. good luck! hope this helps. architect dave
