it depends on the damage of the ceiling. for holes, all you need to do is to do basic repair for holes which are filling the hole and applying texture. it depends on the problem to be repaired. if you are pertaining to the texture, better scrape off the popcorn ceiling and apply new texture. roller is a good choice by the way
