how to put coving up when there is a gap.

hi,

hope you can help. my husband has taken out built-in cupboard in our living room (under stairs).plasterboard (to hide stairs) and holes in wall have been sorted nicely. but now?... how can he put up coving and join as nicely as possible without having a big gap to join up with the rest?
