what is the best way to cover-up popcorn ceiling

i have a home that was built in 1974 and it has ugly popcorn ceiling. to try and take it off is a mess. what are my options for covinging it up. in my and kitchen area i was thinking tin but in the den/family room that is open to the kitchen and dining i was thinking somthing different in off white. cost effective is it better to go with a grid system or single tiles?

i would definitely get rid of the popcorn ceiling. all you need to do is clear the room, cover it all with plastic and lay plastic on the floor to catch the mess and scrap it off. it requires some effort but it is worth it to clear things up.
