How can I turn a popcorn ceiling into a flatter ceiling

My ceilings are too low to put a dropped ceiling in, but I hate the popcorn finish

Popcorn ceiling texture is very easy to remove although it can be messy. One characteristic of the popcorn ceiling is that if it gets wet, it will fall off. My suggestion would be to use a spray bottle with water, soak thouroughly, and using a large putty knife, scrape it off. (Don't forget to use drop cloth).

Thanks Diane. I had a rental unit where the ceiling in the bath was coming off in sheets due to moisture problems. I had read somewhere that dampening the popcorn ceiling and then scraping with a putty knife was the way to go.

Let me add the following. Use a large industrial sized spray bottle and warm, not hot water. This should speed up the whole process, eliminating the need for constant refills.
Second. enlist the help of a partner as the constant overhead work puts a lot of strain on the neck.
And use a large putty knife, the size used when wallpapering would be ideal.
Protect the floor with the new adhesive floor protectors than can be gathered up and thrown away when your project is complete. I think they can now be found at local home warehouse stores.

I am motivated to go and try my own tips. I will also experiment with a steamer and see if that will help in speeding up the process. I will give feedback after doing so.
