Which wires do I use when replacing a ceiling light

I am somewhat skilled at replacing ceiling lights, however I am having difficulty replacing a single bulb light fixture with a double light bulb fixture. Here is my dilema:
Coming out of the ceiling are:
2 black wires that are connected together
2 sets of white and pink wires. One set is connected together and the other
set was connected to the light fixture(white wire with white wire, and black
wire from the light fixture connected to the pink wire.
I assumed that since the white and pink wires were connecting the original single bulb fixture, I could just connect the new 2-bulb fixture with both sets of the white and pink wires.
Problem: This doesn't work. In fact, I am tripping the fuse box when I turn on the electric. What am I doing wrong and what are the black wires for coming out of the ceiling.
