Spray them. Using a roller will knock off a lot of the texture.

Be careful spraying them! My husband used a Wagner Power Painter back in 1995 and it started cracking and dropping off. To quote my Dad "it's like a wet paper napkin" when saturated with paint. After getting a sample tested for asbestos (it didn't have it) we hired a contractor in the area who speacialized in accousitc ceilings. It was well worth the money since it's labor intensive and messy. He textured and painted our bedroom for around $300 then. A couple of years later we had him to the whole house. We only had to spend one night away from the house since it was done in two days.
