I have textured plaster ceilings (a la 70's). The plaster is peeling and flaking off, especially around the light fixture in the center. I'd like to get rid of the texture and have smooth ceilings. What is the best way to accomplish this?

sheet rock over the existing ceiling. as long as the studs are 16" on center and every thing is plum levle and square you shouldnt have a problem. the trick is actually finding everything and marking it.
