Is acoustic (popcorn) ceiling material toxic?

Some do contain asbestos. Our last house had to be tested after we spray painted the ceiling and it started to drop off. Luckily we didn't have asbestos but if we did it would be a whole other ball game. You need to hire special expensive enviornmental workers to remove it since it's a health hazzard.
