With sheetrock that's been up for years, but not painted, what is the process to tape and paint? primer before or after taping?

The correct steps are to tape with compound you can buy at home depot along with the tape apply three coats, first one goes on, put the tape on, apply a little more compund, wait a couple of days until it dries then apply a second coat of compound, wait for that to dry then apply a light 3rd coat of compound, wait for that to dry sand to smooth finish prime it and repaint the whole ceiling.
