What is the easiest drop ceiling to install without losing ceiling height?
My wife and I are contemplating putting in a drop ceiling in our basement. Presently, there isn't a ceiling; just open floor joists. We really can't afford to drop the ceiling height more than an inch or two. Additionally, we'll need to be able to get to the HVAC, electrical and plumbing lines, so the ceiling must be removable. Any thoughts? I'm not the handiest person in the world but I'm willing to try.

unfortunately you may have a problem. a dropped ceiling requires at least 3-4 inches. sheetrock will give the extra space, needing maybe a full inch, but it won't allow you to access the wiring or plumbing above it without major cutting and repair. you need to decide whether the extra two inches are worth the risk of having to do substantial repair in the event of otherwise minor problems.
