Can we raise our ceiling?

We puchased an apartment that has @ 400 ft. of a dropped finished ceiling that we presume was for recessed lighting. The rest of the ceiling is @ 10 ft high and we would like to raise the dropped ceiling back to the original height. What do we need to consider? How big of a project is this?
